Ten years ago, a smart mirror was a university project with a Raspberry Pi behind a pane of glass. Today, mirrors with integrated artificial intelligence are commercial products that analyse your skin, adjust lighting according to the time of day, and display the news while you brush your teeth. At Bathscape, we’ve been testing different models for our projects in Valencia for the past year, and the conclusion is clear: the smart mirror has stopped being a gadget and become a functional element of the modern bathroom.
What a smart mirror with AI actually does in 2026
A smart mirror is, in essence, a semi-transparent screen integrated behind glass with a reflective coating. When the screen is off, it works as a normal mirror. When activated, it displays information overlaid on your reflection. So far, nothing new.
What has changed in 2026 is the artificial intelligence layer. Current models incorporate high-resolution cameras and computer vision algorithms that enable functionalities that three years ago were unthinkable in a consumer product.
According to data presented at CES 2026, the home smart mirror segment grew 34% year-on-year, with more than 40 new models presented at that edition alone. The market is maturing fast and prices are starting to become accessible.
Real features, not catalogue promises
AI skin analysis
The headline feature. A high-resolution camera captures your face and an algorithm trained on millions of dermatological images evaluates hydration, pores, blemishes, expression lines, and redness. The system tracks changes daily over time. It doesn’t replace a dermatologist — that needs to be said loud and clear — but as a monitoring tool, it’s surprisingly useful.
Some models link the analysis to product recommendations. Here our editorial opinion is direct: if the mirror recommends a specific cream from the brand that manufactures it, be sceptical. It’s advertising disguised as diagnosis. The best systems are those that give you objective data and let you decide.
Adaptive lighting
The mirror adjusts the colour temperature of its perimeter LEDs according to the time of day and activity. Cool, bright light in the morning for makeup or shaving, warm soft light in the evening. Advanced models detect whether you’re standing in front of the mirror and activate the appropriate mode automatically, via a presence sensor.
This isn’t a whim. The right lighting is the difference between doing your makeup well at home and discovering the disaster when you step outside into natural light. In Valencia, with the Mediterranean brightness we have, this contrast is particularly noticeable.
Information display
Time, outdoor temperature, calendar, news headlines, traffic for your commute. The information is shown in zones of the mirror that don’t interfere with your reflection (typically the corners and edges). Controlled by gestures, voice, or app.
Fitness and health metrics
The most advanced models integrate cameras that measure heart rate via photoplethysmography (the same technology smartwatches use, but at a distance). Some incorporate a scale integrated into the mirror’s base and sync everything with Apple Health or Google Fit.
Integrated voice assistant
Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri built directly into the mirror. Microphone and speaker incorporated. “Mirror, play my shower playlist” or “Mirror, how long is my commute today?” works exactly as you’d expect.
Smart anti-fog
A rear heating element keeps the surface fog-free. Smart models activate it only when they detect a rise in humidity, saving energy. It seems minor, but it’s genuinely satisfying when you step out of the shower and the mirror is already clear and waiting for you.
Models we’ve tested
Capstone Connected Mirror
The most balanced in terms of value for money. 21.5” or 32” screen with Google Assistant built in, motion sensor, perimeter LED lighting, and WiFi connectivity. No skin analysis camera (a limitation), but with all information and voice assistant features.
Price: 500-900 EUR depending on size.
Kohler Verdera Voice
Hansgrohe has its contender, but it’s Kohler that leads in integrated mirrors. The Verdera Voice has built-in Alexa, adjustable lighting, and a design that blends with any bathroom. Build quality is excellent and installation is plug-and-play if you have a nearby electrical outlet.
Price: 1,200-1,800 EUR.
DIY projects with MagicMirror
For the more tech-savvy, the open-source MagicMirror platform (based on Raspberry Pi) remains a viable option. A recycled monitor, a two-way mirror, and a Raspberry Pi 5 give you a smart mirror for 150-300 EUR. No advanced AI, but fully customisable. At Bathscape we don’t install it as a product, but we’ve helped tech-savvy clients integrate it into their bathroom design.
Models with full AI
Mirrors with complete skin analysis (Himirror, Simplehuman Sensor Mirror Pro) sit in the 300-600 EUR range for tabletop models and 1,500-3,000 EUR for wall-mounted models with large screens. The price jump is justified by the glass quality, camera resolution, and AI software.
Price range: from 500 to 3,000 euros
| Category | Price | What’s included |
|---|---|---|
| Basic (DIY/entry level) | 150-500 EUR | Screen, basic info, no AI |
| Mid-range (consumer) | 500-1,500 EUR | Voice assistant, lighting, anti-fog |
| Premium (full AI) | 1,500-3,000 EUR | Skin analysis, fitness, large screen |
The sweet spot for most bathroom renovations in Valencia is between 800 and 1,500 EUR. In that range, you get a reliable product with a voice assistant, good lighting, and smart anti-fog — the three features that actually get used daily.
Installation: what you need
Installing a smart mirror requires:
Recessed electrical outlet: Behind the mirror, at the correct height. In a full renovation, this is planned from the electrical project. In a retrofit, it may require opening up a section of wall.
Reinforced mounting: A smart mirror weighs between 8 and 25 kg, more than a conventional mirror. The wall must have adequate fixings (in plasterboard, metal or timber reinforcement).
Stable WiFi connection: As with smart showers, the bathroom needs good coverage. A mesh router solves the problem in 90% of cases.
Ventilation: The electronic components generate heat. If the mirror goes in a bathroom without a window, ensure the mechanical ventilation is adequate.
Integration with the rest of the smart bathroom
Where smart mirrors earn their true value is when they integrate with the complete bathroom ecosystem. Imagine this sequence:
- You enter the bathroom —> the presence sensor turns on the light and the mirror.
- You say “good morning” —> your profile activates: the shower starts heating to 38 degrees C, the mirror shows your calendar and the radio.
- You shower —> on stepping out, the mirror is fog-free and displays your skin analysis.
- You get ready —> the lighting adjusts automatically for makeup/shaving.
This level of integration is what we design in our smart-tech projects. It’s not about installing stand-alone gadgets: it’s about conceiving the bathroom as a connected system where every element communicates with the others.
Is it worth it in a Valencia renovation?
Our position at Bathscape is pragmatic. A mid-range smart mirror (800-1,200 EUR) delivers real value if you meet two conditions: you have a bathroom with an accessible socket and you already use voice assistants elsewhere in your home. If you’re already talking to Alexa in the kitchen, doing the same in the bathroom feels natural.
If you don’t use home automation and just want an attractive mirror with good lighting, invest in a quality conventional mirror with perimeter LED lighting (200-400 EUR). Technology advances fast, and in two or three years the AI models will be cheaper and better. The important thing is to leave the infrastructure prepared — the electrical outlet, the connection — so you don’t have to open up the wall when you decide to make the leap.
In the Valencia area, we’re seeing increasing demand for these products, especially in new-build renovations where the homeowner profile is tech-oriented. And frankly, once you try a mirror that turns itself on and tells you the weather while you wash your face, it’s hard to go back.
Frequently asked questions
Does a smart mirror work well in a very humid bathroom?
Yes, as long as it’s a model designed for bathrooms (IP44 minimum). Generic consumer mirrors (tablet-type with mirror frame) aren’t built for constant humidity. Insist on IP certification and an integrated anti-fog system.
Can the mirror’s software be updated?
Most manufacturers offer OTA (over the air) updates for 3-5 years. After that, the hardware keeps working but the AI features may become outdated. It’s the same cycle as a smartphone. Open-source systems like MagicMirror don’t have this limitation.
How long does a smart mirror last?
The glass and structure, indefinitely. The electronics, between 5 and 10 years depending on quality. LEDs have a lifespan of 30,000-50,000 hours (more than 10 years of normal use). The weakest component is usually the screen, similar to a conventional monitor.
