The fixture that 81% of Japanese homes use and almost nobody in Spain does

In Japan, the toilet with integrated water washing isn’t a luxury or a novelty — it’s the standard. According to data from the Japan Sanitary Equipment Industry Association, 81.2% of Japanese households have a toilet with an integrated bidet function. What’s everyday there is considered exotic here. And we think it’s one of the most absurd cultural anomalies in the industry.

We’re not talking about an unnecessary tech gadget. We’re talking about a fixture that washes with water (more hygienic than paper), dries with air (more comfortable), heats the seat (more pleasant), and automates functions (more accessible). All in a single piece of porcelain that takes up exactly the same space as a conventional toilet.

At Bathscape, we’ve been installing smart toilets in bathroom renovations in Valencia for three years. And every client who tries one says the same thing: “Why didn’t I get this sooner?” Let’s analyse what’s on the market, what it costs, and who it makes sense for.

How a smart toilet works

The concept is straightforward: a conventional toilet with an integrated bidet and automated functions. The main components:

Wash nozzle

A retractable arm made of stainless steel or resin extends from the rear of the seat and projects a jet of warm water (adjustable between 30-40 degrees C). The nozzle self-cleans before and after each use with clean water. Premium models have two nozzles: one frontal (feminine wash) and one posterior.

Water heater

Two technologies: tank (pre-heats a 0.5-1 litre reservoir) or instantaneous (heats water on demand). The instantaneous type is more efficient and never runs out of hot water, but draws more peak power (1,000-1,300W).

Air drying

A fan with a heating element blows warm air to dry after washing. Temperature adjustable. Takes 2-3 minutes for complete drying. It doesn’t replace paper 100% for all users, but reduces its use dramatically.

Heated seat

An electric heating element in the seat with several temperature levels (30-40 degrees C). Sounds like a luxury until you use it in January. Then it becomes indispensable.

Additional features (model dependent)

  • Deodoriser: Activated carbon filter that neutralises odours
  • Automatic lid: Opens on approach and closes on departure (proximity sensor)
  • Automatic flush: Activates when you stand up from the seat
  • Night light: Integrated LED that illuminates the bowl interior
  • Energy saving: Eco mode that reduces seat heating when no one is present

Installation requirements

Before getting excited about a model, check these requirements:

Electrical outlet

The smart toilet needs electricity. Typical power: 1,000-1,300W peak (during heating), 50-100W on standby. You need an earthed socket within 1 metre of the toilet. If your bathroom doesn’t have one (most don’t), a cable needs to be run from the electrical panel — or it can be done during the renovation.

Cost of electrical installation: 150-300 EUR if done during the renovation (concealed cable). 400-600 EUR if done separately (surface trunking or building work).

Water supply

Integrated models connect directly to the toilet’s water supply. No additional connection needed. Bidet-seat models (installed on an existing toilet) do need a branch from the water supply.

Drain

Standard. Any smart toilet uses the same drain as a conventional one. No difference.

Space

They occupy the same footprint as a conventional toilet. Some models (Geberit Mera, for example) are slightly deeper (5-8 cm more), which is worth checking in very compact bathrooms.

The accessibility argument

Beyond hygiene and comfort, the smart toilet has an enormous impact on accessibility. For people with reduced mobility — arthritis, Parkinson’s, back injuries, post-operative recovery — the automatic wash and dry function eliminates the need for movements that can be painful or impossible.

For older adults, as we discuss in our assistive bathroom technology guide, the smart toilet can make the difference between needing daily assistance and maintaining autonomy.

And for people with certain medical conditions (haemorrhoids, fissures, perianal dermatitis), water washing is an explicit medical recommendation — far more hygienic and less irritating than paper.

The economic argument

A roll of toilet paper costs between 0.30 and 0.80 EUR. A family of 4 consumes an average of 100 rolls per year (according to Grohe): between 30 and 80 EUR/year. Over 10 years, that’s 300-800 EUR.

The smart toilet doesn’t eliminate paper 100% (many users still use it to supplement drying), but it reduces consumption by 70-90%. Annual saving: 20-70 EUR.

Is that enough ROI to justify a 2,000 EUR toilet? No, let’s be honest. The pure financial return takes decades. But the return in comfort, hygiene, and accessibility is immediate. Not everything is measured in euros — even though at Bathscape we do love measuring things.

Electricity consumption is modest: 3-5 EUR/month depending on usage and model (the heated seat standby draws the most). Eco modes bring it down to 1-2 EUR/month.

Our unfiltered opinion

At Bathscape, we believe the smart toilet is the most underrated product in the modern bathroom. It carries a stigma of being a luxury that doesn’t match reality. It delivers objectively superior hygiene, genuine comfort, and tangible accessibility. And with models like the Roca In-Wash Inspira starting at 1,200 EUR, price is no longer an insurmountable barrier.

That said, it’s not for everyone. If your budget is tight and you have to choose between a smart toilet and proper waterproofing, choose waterproofing without hesitation. Structural always comes first. But if the budget allows, the smart toilet deserves serious consideration.

And a note that amuses us: in Valencia, a city of technology, innovation, and Fallas — a place where people like to live well — the smart toilet should be more popular. But even so. Here we are, trying to get people to stop cleaning themselves with paper like it’s the 19th century.

Frequently asked questions

Is the smart toilet hygienic? Doesn’t the nozzle get contaminated?

The nozzles self-clean with fresh water before and after each use. Premium models use electrolysed water (Duravit, TOTO) with antibacterial properties. When not in use, the nozzles are retracted and protected. Studies from Japanese universities confirm that the bacterial load on the nozzle is comparable to that of a basin tap.

Is it complicated to install?

No more than a conventional toilet — if you already have an electrical point. If you don’t, the electrical installation is the only additional step. If installed during a bathroom renovation, the additional cost of the electrics is minimal (150-300 EUR).

Can I fit a smart seat on my current toilet without replacing it?

Yes, smart bidet seats that install on an existing toilet do exist. TOTO Washlet and some Geberit models offer this option. It’s more economical (600-1,500 EUR) but the aesthetic integration isn’t as clean as a fully integrated model.

Can children use it?

Yes, with supervision. The remote controls allow pressure and temperature adjustment. Some models let you lock features or create user profiles with preset settings.

Your next step

Configure your bathroom with a smart toilet in our configurator and compare the additional cost against a conventional toilet. In many cases, the difference is smaller than you’d imagine.
